Celebrating Our Veterans

Every year on or near Veterans Day, the Rotary Club of Marietta Metro hosts a special luncheon complete with an honor guard, patriotic music, decorations, and special readings to honor the veterans in our community as our guests and to recognize the veterans in our club. All branches of service are recognized. This year, the event will be held in the evening at the beautiful Strand Theater and open to the public. The event will include the showing of the documetary, "Jeremiah," which is the story of Rear Admiral Jeremiah Denton who was a prisoner at the Hanoi Hilton during the Vietnam War and went on to be a U. S. Senator from Alabama.

Secondly, this year, in honor of Veterans Day, a special collection of undergarments and socks are collected for donation to homeless veterans and veterans in need. The collection is facilitated by United Military Care and thanks to the generosity of club members, the goal will be to exceed last year's goal of almost 800 items.

There is a Veteran’s Court in Cobb County which provides a second chance and special assistance to veterans who have been arrested. With assigned mentors and support from many organizations including the American Legion, the veterans graduate with honor. Our club provides gift cards as congratulations for their hard work.

Plans are underway for a Cobb Veterans Memorial to be constructed to honor veterans from all branches of service since WWI. The Rotary Club of Marietta Metro hopes to partner with other Rotary Clubs in Cobb County to be a part of this memorial.

We will be collecting hard cover and paperback books for distribution to veterans. This is in cooperation wth United Military Care.
